An interactive art piece that hopefully encourages people to think about the famous news photos of the day. Through actually drawing and coloring the most widely seen phtoographs in the new of the week, we hoped to provoke thought and allow us all to understand how subjective the “truth” can be.
Drawing of today is a publishing application that encourages visitors to draw online. over the course of one year, a new line drawing based on current news is uploaded weekly to the linesonline website, inviting readers of all backgrounds to comment on these images. visitors’ contributions are saved in a virtual gallery, which grows on a daily basis.
I developed this concept and website with the artist Ram Katzir (http://www.ramkatzir.com). We traced as many famous old photographs as we could stand, then I vectorized all of our line drawing and touched them up suing Flash and sometimes Illustrator. We used the Trace Bitmap function in Flash and tweaked each line drawing by hand. This was before the days of Illustrator CS4, which now has the function built into it.
Working with artists like Ram is great fun for me because we get to play with concepts without the burden of having to prove much in the way of commerce. As much as I love advertising and the art of selling and persuading with our communications, I also absolutely adore the Idea. Yes, in capital letters. When the Idea is strong, no matter what the forum, success is much ore likely.
